If something doesn't quite work right after you've installed macOS Catalina, you can reinstall the operating system so it is a fresh copy. Reinstalling a fresh copy of macOS Catalina will not affect your current settings. Applications and settings will remain the same. Completing this process replaces the core files of macOS Catalina in case something wasn't working right before.
Before you start: Back up your data
- It is a good idea to perform one full backup before starting with a clean copy of macOS Catalina. You can also back up files and documents using a cloud-based storage system like Dropbox, OneDrive, or the easiest: iCloud.
- Make sure the computer on which you're installing a fresh copy of macOS Catalina can be connected to the internet, either via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This step is important. An Internet connection is needed in order to reinstall the macOS operating system.
- If you are using a laptop, make sure it is connected to a power source.
How to install a new copy of macOS Catalina in Recovery Mode
Recovery Mode is the special salvation of the Mac that first launched with OS X 10.7 Lion. It creates a temporary boot partition that allows you to access certain things on your computer that you might not be able to if your system froze or crashed. It is the easiest way to install a fresh copy of an operating system.
- Connect your Mac to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet
- Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen.
- Select Restart from the drop-down menu.
- Hold down Command and R (⌘ + R) at the same time. When you hear the startup chime (or when the screen goes black on newer Macs), keep holding the keys until your computer reboots.
- Click on Reinstall a new copy of macOS.
- Click Continue.
- Click Continue again when the installer window appears.
- Agree to the software terms and conditions.
- Select your hard drive.
- Click Install.
- Complete the installation process.
How to update to Catalina after reinstalling an earlier macOS
When you install the latest operating system from Recovery Mode, sometimes, your Mac will install an older operating system, like High Sierra or Mojave. Once the older operating system installation is complete, you can then download Catalina as a software update.
Remember, you must have an internet connection in order to download a fresh copy of the Mac operating system.
- Open System Preferences.
- Click on Software Updates.
- Click on Update Now.

macOS Sierra: Frequently Asked Questions
On September 20, 2016, Apple released its new operating system, macOS Sierra. We'd like to offer you a brief overview and answer any questions you may have at this time.
What is macOS Sierra?
macOS Sierra is an operating system for desktop and laptop computers. It is version 10.12 of the OS X series of operating systems. In contrast to previous versions of OS X, Apple has dropped the 'X' to make the branding more consistent with its other products, including iOS and watchOS.
When will it be available?
Sierra is available now—it was released September 20, 2016.
How much does it cost?
Like OS X El Capitan, Sierra is a free upgrade.
Who can get macOS Sierra?
Anyone with a newer Apple computer can upgrade to Sierra. However, some Macs from 2010 and earlier will not be able to upgrade, even if they met the requirements for El Capitan or Yosemite. The following models can upgrade to macOS Sierra:
- MacBook: Late 2009 and later
- MacBook Air: 2010 and later
- MacBook Pro: 2010 and later
- iMac: Late 2009 and later
- Mac Mini: 2010 and later
- Mac Pro: 2010 and later
How do I get macOS Sierra?
If you buy a new Apple computer, it will come pre-installed. You won't need to do anything to install it.
If you want to upgrade an existing computer, you can download and install Sierra by going to the App Store on your Mac (shown below) and clicking Updates.
As with previous versions, macOS Sierra is only available as an online download—you cannot purchase a physical copy at a retail store.
What's new in macOS Sierra?
Although the overall interface is similar to previous versions of OS X, there are some significant changes:
- Siri is available in macOS Sierra. This digital personal assistant software has been available on the iPhone and iPad for years, and now it will also be available on desktop and laptop computers. It also has some new features that are more tailored to computers. For example, you can use it to search for files on your computer.
- Your Desktop and Documents folder can now automatically sync with iCloud Drive. If you have an iPhone or iPad, this makes it easier to access your files when you're away from your computer.
- The Photos app has various improvements. The new Memories feature can automatically create slideshows of related photos, such as photos taken at a specific location.
- Tabs are now available in many different apps—not just web browsers. If you do a lot of multi-tasking with multiple windows, this feature could be very useful.
- Apple Pay can be used to make purchases online. Note: To use this feature, you may need to have an iPhone or iPad with Touch ID because these devices are used to authenticate your payments (as shown below). Touch ID is available with the iPhone 5s, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3, iPad Pro, and other newer devices.
